Shared passion meets craftsmanship
The partnership between TV chef Tim Mälzer and the traditional Japanese knife manufacturer KAI began over 15 years ago, rooted in a shared ambition to bring kitchen knives to market that meet the highest standards of innovation, design, and quality – suitable for both professional chefs and passionate home cooks.
What started as an exchange of ideas quickly evolved into a close, inspiring collaboration. For both parties, the partnership means more than just business: the fusion of KAI’s decades-long craftsmanship with Tim Mälzer’s creative expertise enriches and motivates both sides to keep exploring new paths.
The collaboration is a prime example of a win-win situation: Tim Mälzer not only has an experienced partner in KAI, but through cultural exchange, he continually integrates the precision and philosophy of Japanese cuisine into his own gastronomy and working style.
Strong values, strong Brand Fit
From the very beginning, it was clear how enriching different cultural identities can be when united by shared values and goals. Tim Mälzer shapes the design of blades and handles with his signature style, while KAI brings these ideas to life through masterful forging.
The meeting of cultures serves as a source of inspiration – with a passion for top quality and user-friendliness always at the centre. For Tim Mälzer, the collaboration holds special significance: the opportunity to co-develop unique, high-quality products through creative exchange continues to motivate him deeply.
Collections that build bridges
Tim Mälzer’s trips to Japan have been especially formative, always accompanied by Sundance. The intense cultural exchange and immersion in Japanese cuisine continue to influence his culinary style to this day. For Mälzer, Japanese cuisine is among the most inspiring and best in the world.
The influences go far beyond new recipes: they shape his gastronomy, his culinary approach, and his appreciation for quality. Every joint product development is an expression of this vibrant cultural exchange.
Over the years, the partnership has resulted in an impressive collection:
At the beginning of the collaboration, the joint KAI Shun Premier Tim Mälzer Minamo Series was launched, followed by the Junior Knife from KAI and Tim Mälzer.
The success was significant, and the enthusiasm for joint product lines just as strong. Since 2018, the KAI Tim Mälzer Kamagata Series has expanded the portfolio. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the collaboration, KAI is also releasing a special edition knife – the Tantō 2025.
A partnership with a future
The 15-year anniversary in 2025 marks just one of many milestones in this collaboration. Tim Mälzer and KAI continue to rely on mutual inspiration, a commitment to the highest quality, and a strong determination to establish many more innovative products together. This partnership impressively demonstrates how international collaborations connect not only markets, but also people, values, and visions.
